power speaker for small gigs

Yorkville Elite E160P Powered Speaker – review

The Yorkville Elite power speaker is awesome. I’ve had mine for about 10 years now and used it on many occasions. The sound is very rounded and clean. The stand-by noise is very low. This is a huge thing for me and is generally a good indication of quality. I hate the ssssssss sound that comes out of some speakers when they are turned on but not being used. The Yorkville speaker is very quiet when just on stand-by.  These are just some of the reasons  why I like it.

Construction of the Yorkville Elite power speaker is very sturdy. I can’t say that I have abused mine, so I’m not able to comment on how it withstands poor treatment. But it feels very solid. It has a wood frame construction which helps with its great sound. It is heavy and has a wooden frame, which is somewhat of an indication of quality. The speaker has a handle and can be carried short distances.  I generally prefer to use a small dolly to lug it around. That way I can also carry the rest of my setup and my guitar.

The speaker is really easy to use as it has no mixing or effects controls. Although a microphone can be plugged directly into the speaker, you will not get the best sound that way. For that you will need at least a reverb pedal or better yet a small mixing board with reverb and possibly other effects.

I only have one of these speakers. As a lone speaker, it worked well for intimate gigs (20 – 50 people) and for reception background music (100 – 150 people).
